Frequently Asked Questions
What services does a general practitioner (GP) offer?
A general practitioner (GP) manages a wide range of health needs — from acute illness like infections, flu, and injuries, to the ongoing management of chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, and high cholesterol. GPs also provide preventive care including vaccinations, health screenings, and cancer checks. At Kuilsriver Doctors, our doctors perform minor surgical procedures in-practice, offer mental health support, conduct occupational and pre-employment medicals, and manage women's and men's health. Think of your GP as the coordinator of your overall healthcare — we treat what we can and refer you to the right specialist when needed.
Do I need a referral to see a specialist?
In South Africa, most medical aid schemes require a GP referral before they will fund a specialist consultation. Even if your scheme does not require it, seeing your GP first is recommended. We can assess whether a specialist visit is necessary, choose the right type of specialist for your condition, provide a referral letter with your full history, and in many cases treat or manage the problem at GP level — saving you a specialist co-payment. Kuilsriver Doctors refers to specialists at Tygerberg Hospital in Bellville and private practitioners at Cape Gate Mediclinic in Brackenfell, among others.
Which medical aids does Kuilsriver Doctors accept?
We see patients on all major South African medical aid schemes, including Discovery Health, Bonitas, Medshield, Momentum, KeyCare, and Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS). We also see cash-paying patients. For patients whose medical aid has specific network requirements, we recommend confirming with your scheme before booking. If you are unsure whether we are contracted with your plan, call us on 021 903 6830 and we will confirm.
What are your consulting hours and how do I make an appointment?
Kuilsriver Doctors is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 17:00, and on Saturday from 8:00 to 12:00. We are closed on Sundays and South African public holidays. To book an appointment, call 021 903 6830 during consulting hours. We ask that patients book in advance where possible — walk-in patients are accommodated based on availability, with priority given to urgent presentations. We are located at 33 Van Riebeeck Road, Kuilsriver, with parking available on the street.
Can I see a GP for mental health concerns?
Yes. Your GP is often the best starting point for mental health concerns. Many patients in Kuilsriver are more comfortable discussing stress, low mood, anxiety, or sleep problems with a familiar family doctor than seeking out a psychologist or psychiatrist. Dr Pedro and Dr Adams can assess your symptoms, rule out physical causes, provide initial counselling, and refer you to a mental health specialist if ongoing support is needed. There is no need to wait until things become a crisis — early intervention is far more effective and your consultation is completely confidential.
Do you do driver's licence medicals and work medicals?
Yes. Kuilsriver Doctors is one of the few practices in Kuilsriver offering driver's licence medicals (K407 form) and professional driving permit (PrDP) medicals for commercial vehicle drivers. We are on Van Riebeeck Road — the same road as the Kuilsriver Traffic Department — so patients can complete their medical at our practice and submit their paperwork at the Traffic Department in a single trip. We also offer pre-employment medicals and occupational health assessments for employees and employers in the Kuilsriver and Blackheath area. To book, call 021 903 6830.
