Women's health needs change across every decade of life — from contraception decisions in your twenties and thirties, to cervical screening and pregnancy care, to managing menopause symptoms and cardiovascular risk as you get older. At Kuilsriver Doctors, we provide GP-level women's health consultations for patients from Kuilsriver, Brackenfell, Blue Downs, and the surrounding northern suburbs.
You do not need to be referred to a specialist for most women's health concerns. Pap smears, contraception counselling, IUD fitting, STI screening, early pregnancy care, and menopause management are all handled at GP level. When specialist input is needed — an obstetrician for a high-risk pregnancy, or a gynaecologist for a surgical concern — we refer promptly and remain involved in your ongoing care.

Cervical Cancer Screening (Pap Smears)
Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers — when pre-cancerous changes are caught early through regular screening, treatment is straightforward and outcomes are excellent. South Africa's Department of Health recommends cervical screening (a pap smear) every three years for women aged 30 to 65 with normal results. For women under 30 who are sexually active, timing depends on history. Women living with HIV should discuss more frequent screening with their doctor.
A pap smear takes a few minutes. The cervical cells collected are sent to a laboratory for analysis. We will discuss the results with you and advise on follow-up if any abnormalities are found. Most abnormal results are low-grade and resolve without intervention — the purpose of screening is to find changes early, before they progress.
If you are not sure when you last had a pap smear, book a women's health check. We will check your records, perform the smear if it is due, and set up a recall schedule going forward.
Contraception Counselling and IUD Fitting
Choosing contraception is not a one-size-fits-all decision. The right method depends on your health history, your lifestyle, how reliable the method needs to be, and your reproductive plans. We offer contraception counselling to help you work through those factors, and we can prescribe or fit the full range of GP-level contraceptive methods:
Oral contraceptives — the combined oral contraceptive pill (oestrogen and progestogen) and the progestogen-only pill (mini-pill) are the most commonly used methods. We review your history for contraindications — including migraine with aura, smoking and age, and clotting risk — before prescribing.
Injectable contraception — Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate) is given every twelve weeks by injection. It is highly effective and requires no daily attention. Suitable for patients who prefer a low-maintenance method. Discuss return to fertility timelines at your appointment.
Intrauterine devices (IUDs) — we fit both the hormonal IUD (Mirena, effective for five years) and the copper IUD (non-hormonal, effective for up to ten years). IUD fitting requires a specific appointment. Most patients experience mild to moderate cramping during fitting that settles within a few hours. Both types are highly effective reversible contraception.
Emergency contraception — available at the practice. The levonorgestrel pill (Plan B equivalent) is most effective within 72 hours of unprotected sex, but can be used up to 120 hours. The copper IUD is the most effective form of emergency contraception and can be fitted up to five days after unprotected intercourse.
Menopause Assessment and Management
Menopause typically occurs between ages 45 and 55 in South African women, with the average age around 51. Perimenopause — the transition period leading up to the final menstrual period — can last several years and produces a range of symptoms including hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, mood changes, vaginal dryness, and joint aches.
If you are experiencing symptoms that you think may be menopause-related, your GP is the right first stop. We will take a full history, assess your symptom pattern, order blood tests where indicated (FSH, LH, oestradiol), and discuss management options. Not every woman with menopause symptoms needs hormone therapy — lifestyle changes, vaginal oestrogen for local symptoms, and non-hormonal options are appropriate for many patients.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is an evidence-based treatment for moderate to severe menopausal symptoms and for preventing bone density loss. The decision to use HRT involves a personalised assessment of benefits and risks — including personal and family history of breast cancer, cardiovascular health, and thrombosis risk. We do not prescribe it as a blanket treatment, but where it is appropriate, it is effective.
If you have been self-managing with over-the-counter supplements or are unsure whether what you are experiencing is menopause, come in for a proper assessment before making decisions about treatment.
Pregnancy Care
If you have a positive pregnancy test and are not sure what to do next, start with your GP. We confirm the pregnancy, assess gestational age, start antenatal vitamins (folic acid is critical in the first trimester), arrange first-trimester blood tests, and refer for an early ultrasound scan where indicated.
Most pregnancies are managed as shared care between a GP and an obstetrician. We handle the GP component — monitoring blood pressure, reviewing blood results, managing common pregnancy complaints (nausea, anaemia, urinary tract infections) — and refer to a suitable obstetrician at the appropriate point in the pregnancy.
For patients who book their care late or who are unaware of their pregnancy until the second trimester, we see you promptly and make sure all necessary assessments are completed without delay.
Postpartum care — the six-week check for mother and baby — is also done at the practice. See our baby and child clinic page for well-baby checks from birth onward.
STI Screening and Sexual Health
All consultations at Kuilsriver Doctors are confidential. Sexual health concerns — whether testing for a sexually transmitted infection, discussing safer sex, or starting PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention) — are handled with the same confidentiality as any other medical consultation.
We test for the full range of common STIs including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, and trichomoniasis. Testing typically involves swabs and blood tests depending on the clinical picture. Treatment is available at the practice for most infections.
HIV testing and counselling are available. For patients at ongoing high risk of HIV exposure, we assess eligibility for PrEP (Truvada or equivalent) and monitor as required. This service is available to all patients — not only those with previous risk events.
Women's Health Checks
A dedicated women's health check is a worthwhile annual or biennial appointment from age 30 onward. It typically includes:
- Blood pressure measurement
- BMI and weight trend assessment
- Cervical screening (pap smear) if due
- Breast examination and breast self-examination guidance
- Cardiovascular risk factor review
- Menstrual cycle history and any concerns
- Blood tests if indicated (cholesterol, glucose, thyroid function, full blood count)
If you have not had a women's health check in the last two years, book one. Many conditions — including high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, and thyroid disease — have no obvious symptoms until they are well established. Early detection changes outcomes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often do I need a pap smear in South Africa?
South Africa's National Department of Health recommends cervical screening every three years for women aged 30 to 65 who have normal results. Women under 30 who are sexually active should discuss timing with their GP. If previous results have shown abnormalities or if you are HIV-positive, more frequent screening may be recommended.
What contraception options are available at a GP in Kuilsriver?
We offer contraception counselling and can prescribe the combined oral contraceptive pill, progestogen-only pill, injectable contraception (Depo-Provera), and emergency contraception. We also fit intrauterine devices (IUDs), both hormonal (Mirena) and non-hormonal (copper coil). The right choice depends on your health history, lifestyle, and reproductive plans.
Does the practice see patients during pregnancy?
Yes. We provide early pregnancy confirmation, first-trimester care, and antenatal monitoring coordination. Most pregnancies require shared care between a GP and an obstetrician — we manage the GP component and refer to a suitable obstetrician at the appropriate point. We also provide postpartum care after delivery.
I think I might be going through menopause — should I see a GP first?
Yes. Your GP is the right first stop for menopause assessment. We assess symptoms, rule out other causes, and discuss management options including hormone replacement therapy (HRT) where appropriate. The decision about HRT involves a full health history review — it is not a one-size-fits-all prescription.
Can I get an IUD fitted at the practice?
Yes. We fit both hormonal IUDs (Mirena) and copper IUDs at the practice. IUD fitting is done during a specific appointment — book in advance rather than walking in. Most women experience mild cramping during fitting that settles within a few hours.
What is included in a women's health check at your practice?
A women's health check typically includes blood pressure, BMI assessment, cervical screening if due, breast examination discussion, and cardiovascular risk factor review. We also discuss contraception, menstrual cycle concerns, and any symptoms. Bloods (cholesterol, glucose, thyroid, full blood count) can be added if needed.
Do you treat STIs at the practice?
Yes. We diagnose and treat sexually transmitted infections including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, and trichomoniasis. All consultations are confidential. HIV testing and PrEP counselling are also available — mention it when booking.
