Vaccination Services in Kuilsriver

Childhood immunisations, flu vaccines, travel vaccinations, and adult boosters — all by appointment at Kuilsriver Doctors on Van Riebeeck Road.

Vaccinations (inentings) protect you and your family from illnesses that are entirely preventable. At Kuilsriver Doctors on Van Riebeeck Road, we offer a full range of vaccination services — from the first injections a newborn receives to the boosters adults often forget they still need.

Whether you're a parent trying to keep your baby's vaccination card up to date, an adult who can't remember the last time they had a tetanus shot, or a family planning a trip to East Africa, we can help. Call us on 021 903 6830 and we'll sort out what you need.

Childhood Immunisations — Following the SA EPI Schedule

South Africa's Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) sets out exactly which vaccines children should receive, and when. It's a carefully designed schedule that builds protection layer by layer. Here's what it looks like:

  • At birth: BCG (tuberculosis protection) and OPV (oral polio vaccine)
  • 6 weeks: OPV 1, Rotavirus 1, DTaP-IPV-Hib-HBV 1, PCV 1
  • 10 weeks: DTaP-IPV-Hib-HBV 2, PCV 2
  • 14 weeks: Rotavirus 2, DTaP-IPV-Hib-HBV 3, PCV 3
  • 6 months: Measles 1 (the schedule was updated in 2020 — the first measles dose now comes at 6 months, not 9)
  • 9 months: PCV booster
  • 12 months: Measles 2, DTaP-IPV-Hib-HBV booster
  • 18 months: DTaP-IPV booster
  • 6 years: Td booster
  • 12 years: Td booster

The Kuilsriver Community Day Centre (CDC) on Van Riebeeck Road does offer EPI vaccinations for free. The drawback is the queues — parents often arrive before 7am and wait until after lunch. If you're a working parent in Soneike or Brackenfell, that's a full day gone for a 10-minute procedure.

At Kuilsriver Doctors, we offer the same EPI vaccinations by appointment. You arrive at your booked time, the vaccine is administered, you wait 15 minutes to make sure there's no immediate reaction, and you're done. We update your child's Road to Health booklet and keep a record on file.

If your child has missed some vaccinations, don't worry. Catch-up schedules are possible — we'll look at what has been given and map out what's still needed. Schools in Kuilsriver and across the Northern Suburbs require up-to-date vaccination records for enrolment, so it's worth getting this sorted early rather than scrambling in January.

Flu Vaccinations — Before Cape Town's Winter Hits

Cape Town gets cold. Not Joburg cold, but Kuilsriver sits in a low-lying valley where the damp air settles and the winter evenings can drop to 5°C or lower. The flu season runs roughly May through August, and it hits the Northern Suburbs hard every year.

The best time to get vaccinated is March or April — before the season is in full swing. It takes about two weeks after the injection for full immunity to develop, so leaving it until June means you've already missed part of the window.

Who should be first in line for a flu vaccine?

  • Adults over 65 (flu is significantly more dangerous in this age group)
  • Patients with chronic conditions — diabetes (suikersiekte), high blood pressure (bloeddruk), asthma, or heart disease
  • Pregnant women — the flu vaccine is safe in pregnancy and protects both mother and baby
  • Children from 6 months old
  • Healthcare workers and caregivers

One thing we hear often: "I got it last year — why do I need it again?" Because the flu virus mutates. The vaccine is updated every year to match the strains that are circulating. Last year's vaccine doesn't cover this year's strain. Annual vaccination is the standard recommendation, and it's a simple one to stick to.

Travel Vaccinations — The Biggest Gap in Kuilsriver

If you search for travel vaccinations in Kuilsriver, you'll find almost nothing. Residents who need a yellow fever certificate or typhoid cover before travelling to sub-Saharan Africa have historically had to drive to Cape Town CBD or Bellville to find a provider. That's an avoidable trip.

Kuilsriver Doctors offers travel vaccination consultations for families and individuals heading to Africa, Asia, and beyond. We assess your destination, your itinerary, and your existing vaccination history, and we put together a plan that's specific to your trip.

Some of the most common travel vaccines we provide include:

  • Yellow fever — certificate required for entry into many countries in tropical Africa, including Tanzania, Uganda, DRC, and Angola. South Africa also requires a yellow fever certificate when re-entering from endemic countries
  • Typhoid — for travel to areas with less reliable food and water hygiene
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Rabies — for travellers working with animals or going into rural areas
  • Meningococcal — required for Hajj pilgrims and recommended for sub-Saharan Africa

Timing matters. Some vaccines need to be given 4–6 weeks before you travel. If you're leaving in a hurry, book as soon as possible so we can work with what's available.

Adult Boosters — Vaccinations Don't Stop at Childhood

Most adults assume they're fully covered from childhood immunisations. Many aren't.

Tetanus and diphtheria (Td): The Td booster is recommended every 10 years. If you work with tools, in a garden, or in an industrial setting like the Blackheath area factories, tetanus is a genuine risk from cuts and puncture wounds. When last did you have one?

Pertussis (whooping cough): Adults in regular contact with newborns — grandparents, caregivers, new parents — should have a Tdap booster. Whooping cough in adults is unpleasant but manageable; in a newborn under 6 weeks, it can be life-threatening. The baby is protected by the people around them being vaccinated.

Pneumococcal vaccine: Recommended for adults over 65 and those with chronic illnesses. Pneumonia is a real risk in Cape Town's wet winter months.

Hepatitis B: Three-dose series if you were never vaccinated. Important for anyone in a healthcare or high-contact setting.

Shingles: Available on request for adults over 50. Anyone who had chickenpox as a child carries the virus in their nervous system for life — the shingles vaccine significantly reduces the chance of it reactivating.

A quick review of your vaccination history at your next consultation is all it takes to identify what's current and what needs updating.

How Vaccinations Work at Our Practice

The process is straightforward.

Book your appointment. Call us on 021 903 6830 or walk in. Appointments are preferred so we can ensure the right vaccines are ready and the doctor has time to review your history first.

Bring your vaccination booklet. For children, that's the Road to Health booklet. For adults, a yellow vaccination booklet or any previous records. If you've lost it, we'll work from your history and start a new record.

The vaccination itself. The actual injection takes about 30 seconds. We'll ask you to stay in the waiting room for 15 minutes afterwards to monitor for any immediate reaction — these are rare but we take them seriously.

What to expect afterwards. A sore arm at the injection site for a day or two is normal. A mild fever or fatigue for 24–48 hours after some vaccines is also common — it's your immune system responding. We'll tell you specifically what to expect for each vaccine given.

Our vaccines are stored at the correct cold-chain temperatures at all times. The practice has generator backup for load shedding, so cold storage is never interrupted — something worth checking when choosing where to get vaccinated.

We serve families from across the Northern Suburbs — Soneike, Brackenfell, Kraaifontein, and Blackheath — and we're easy to find on Van Riebeeck Road with parking available outside.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vaccinations does my baby need in the first year?

South Africa's EPI schedule starts at birth with BCG and OPV, then a series at 6, 10, and 14 weeks covering diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, Hib, hepatitis B, rotavirus, and pneumococcal. The first measles vaccine is given at 6 months. We follow this schedule and update your child's Road to Health booklet at each visit.

When should I get a flu vaccine in Cape Town?

The Cape Town flu season runs from May to August. We recommend vaccinating in March or April — immunity takes about two weeks to develop, so vaccinating before winter arrives gives you full protection when it counts. Flu vaccines are available at Kuilsriver Doctors from February each year.

Does my child need to be up to date on vaccinations to start school in Kuilsriver?

Yes. Schools across the Northern Suburbs, including those in Kuilsriver and Brackenfell, require a completed vaccination card on enrolment. If your child has missed vaccines, we can assess which ones are outstanding and administer them in a catch-up schedule before the school year starts.

Can I get travel vaccinations in Kuilsriver without driving to Cape Town?

Yes. Kuilsriver Doctors offers travel vaccination consultations in Kuilsriver. We assess your destination and provide the relevant vaccines, including yellow fever certificates for travel to tropical Africa. Most residents previously had to travel to the CBD or Bellville — we're the closest private provider in the area.

Do adults need booster vaccines — or is childhood vaccination enough?

Childhood vaccination provides a solid foundation, but some protection fades over time. The tetanus-diphtheria (Td) booster is recommended every 10 years. Adults over 65 should consider a pneumococcal vaccine. Anyone over 50 can discuss the shingles vaccine. A quick review at your next consultation will identify any gaps.

How is getting vaccinated here different from going to the Kuilsriver CDC?

The Kuilsriver CDC offers basic EPI vaccinations for free, but wait times of 4–6 hours are common. At Kuilsriver Doctors, vaccinations are by appointment — you arrive, receive the vaccine, observe for 15 minutes, and leave. We also offer flu, travel, and adult booster vaccines that are not available at the government clinic.
